Stop 01 · Overview

Germany at a glance.

Germany rewrote its immigration law in 2023 and 2024 to compete for talent, and Indians are the biggest winners: we are now the largest group of EU Blue Card holders. The Opportunity Card lets you arrive without a job offer, qualifications are recognised faster, and citizenship now takes five years instead of eight.

The catch is language. You can get hired in English at a Berlin or Munich tech firm, but everyday life, most employers and the fast citizenship track want German. We build A1–B2 coaching into every German file for that reason.

Stop 02 · Strategic pathways

Strategic pathways to relocate.

Six doors in. The right one depends on your degree, experience, money and how much patience you have.

Route 01

EU Blue Card

For: Degree holders with a job offer above the salary threshold

Lower threshold for shortage occupations and recent graduates; fastest route to permanent residence.

Route 02

Skilled Worker visa

For: Recognised professionals or vocational graduates with an offer

Covers roles below the Blue Card salary bar — nurses, technicians, trades.

Route 03

Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

For: Points-scored job seekers without an offer yet

Up to 12 months in Germany to find work, with part-time work allowed meanwhile.

Route 04

Student visa

For: Admits to German universities, many programs tuition-free

18-month residence permit after graduation to find a job.

Route 05

Ausbildung (vocational training)

For: Young candidates open to a paid 2–3 year apprenticeship

Earn while you train; leads directly to skilled-worker status.

Route 06

Family reunion

For: Spouses and children of Blue Card and skilled-worker holders

Spouse gets full work rights; no German test required for Blue Card families.

Stop 03 · Visa & immigration

Visa & immigration details.

German visas are decided on paper, by rule, at the consulate. There is no points lottery — if your qualification is recognised and your contract meets the threshold, you get the visa. The work is in getting the recognition and the documents exactly right.

What you'll need to show

  • Degree listed in the anabin database, or a formal recognition (ZAB) statement
  • Signed employment contract or binding offer with salary stated
  • Employer's declaration of employment (Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis)
  • Proof of health insurance valid from arrival
  • Blocked account or sponsor letter for students and job seekers
  • Language certificate where the role or route requires it (Goethe/telc)
  • Consulate appointment — book early, slots run out in Delhi and Mumbai

Stop 04 · Study & education

Study & education.

Public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition — you pay a semester contribution that usually includes a transport pass. English-taught master's programs in engineering, data science and management are plentiful, and Indian students are the largest international cohort in the country.

  • Indian applicants need an APS certificate before applying for the visa
  • A blocked account proves you can fund living costs for the first year
  • Students can work 140 full days a year alongside studies
  • 18-month job-seeker permit after graduation, then Blue Card on a qualifying offer
  • TU9 universities and Fachhochschulen both lead to the same visas

Stop 05 · Job market

Job market & opportunities.

Germany's shortage list reads like an Indian engineering campus. Automotive, machinery, chemicals and energy need engineers; hospitals are recruiting nurses directly from India under bilateral agreements; and every Mittelstand company is digitising with too few developers.

Stop 06 · Can I afford it?

Can I afford it?.

Germany is cheaper to live in than the UK or Australia, but Munich is not. Rent is the variable; groceries, transport and healthcare are predictable and mostly deducted at source.

Expensive

Munich · Frankfurt · Hamburg · Stuttgart

High salaries and even higher rents; flat-hunting is competitive.

Balanced

Berlin · Cologne · Düsseldorf · Nuremberg

Big job markets, rent still rising but manageable on a Blue Card salary.

Easier

Leipzig · Dresden · Dortmund · Essen

Growing tech and industry hubs with some of the lowest rents in the west.

Budget for these before you fly

  • Three months' rent as a deposit (Kaution)
  • Health insurance from day one — public or private
  • Blocked account if you arrive as a student or job seeker
  • Unfurnished flats — even the kitchen is often not included
  • Language courses if your role isn't English-speaking

Stop 07 · Why go

Why Germany?.

No IELTS required

Most work visas don't test English; German helps but isn't mandatory for the Blue Card.

Fastest PR in Europe

Blue Card holders can apply for permanent residence in as little as 21 months.

Tuition-free public universities

A world-class master's for the cost of a semester fee.

Europe on your doorstep

Schengen travel and the EU market — 27 countries, one residence permit.

Dual citizenship is now allowed

Since 2024 you no longer have to give up your existing passport to naturalise.

Strong worker protections

30 days' leave, strict working hours and unions that actually work.

Stop 08 · Life there

What's it like to live there?.

Germany is orderly, punctual and quieter than you expect — shops close on Sundays, rubbish is sorted into five bins, and neighbours notice. In return you get trains that go everywhere, cities built for cycling, and a growing Indian community that fills Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich with Diwali and cricket.

Stop 09 · Long-term

Long-term: residence & citizenship.

Germany's residence ladder is short and rule-based. A Blue Card converts to permanent settlement (Niederlassungserlaubnis) within about two years, and the 2024 citizenship law cut naturalisation to five years while allowing dual nationality — India, however, does not, so most clients choose OCI after naturalising.

  1. Stage 1

    Residence permit

Blue Card or skilled-worker permit tied to your job for the first two years

  2. Stage 2

    Permanent settlement

After 27 months on a Blue Card, or 21 with B1 German

  3. Stage 3

    Citizenship

5 years' residence, B1 German, and a naturalisation test

Stop 10 · Relocation process

Relocation process, step by step.

Eight stops from first call to first paycheque. We run them in parallel wherever the rules allow.

  1. 01

    Profile assessment

We check anabin recognition and Opportunity Card points on the same call.

  2. 02

    Pathway selection

Blue Card with a job, Opportunity Card without one, or study first.

  3. 03

    Qualification recognition

ZAB statement or professional licence for regulated jobs like nursing.

  4. 04

    German language

A1 for most family visas, B1 for fast PR — coaching runs alongside your job search.

  5. 05

    Job search & offer

German-format CV, employer outreach and interview prep in the German style.

  6. 06

    Visa application

Consulate appointment, contract, insurance and blocked account where needed.

  7. 07

    Approval & travel

Entry visa issued; you fly and register your address within two weeks.

  8. 08

    Settlement

Residence permit card, tax ID, bank account, health insurance card.

Stop 11 · Taxes

Taxes in Germany.

German payslips are famously long. Income tax is progressive and sits alongside social contributions for pension, health, unemployment and long-term care — roughly a fifth of gross pay, matched by your employer. In return you get a pension, full healthcare and unemployment cover from your first month.

  • Tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by post after you register your address
  • Tax class (Steuerklasse) depends on marital status — married couples pay less
  • Social contributions cover health, pension, unemployment and care insurance
  • Church tax only applies if you register a religion — most Indians don't
  • Tax year is the calendar year; filing is optional for many employees but often refunds money
  • Solidarity surcharge has been abolished for most earners

General orientation, not tax advice — rates and thresholds change every year. We confirm the current figures when we plan your move.
