Stop 01 · Overview
New Zealand at a glance.
New Zealand is the quiet achiever of our destinations. It never dominates the headlines the way Canada or Australia do, which is exactly why our clients get hired there: employers are accredited in advance, the Green List names the occupations that go straight to residence, and the whole process is run by one agency with clear rules.
The trade-off is scale. Auckland is the only city over a million people, salaries are below Australia's and the job market is thinner. For nurses, engineers, teachers, tradespeople and IT specialists, though, the demand is real and the path is short.
Stop 02 · Strategic pathways
Strategic pathways to relocate.
Six doors in. The right one depends on your degree, experience, money and how much patience you have.
Route 01
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
For: Anyone with a job offer from an accredited NZ employer
The main work route; employer accreditation is pre-checked so your visa is faster.
Route 02
Green List — Straight to Residence
For: Tier 1 shortage occupations: nurses, engineers, ICT, surveyors
Apply for residence directly from India with a qualifying job offer.
Route 03
Green List — Work to Residence
For: Tier 2 occupations: teachers, trades, technicians
Residence after 24 months working in the role.
Route 04
Skilled Migrant Category
For: Skilled workers with an NZ job and points from qualifications or pay
Six-point system — a master's, a licence or a high salary can qualify you.
Route 05
Student → Post Study Work Visa
For: Admits to NZ universities and polytechnics
Up to three years' open work rights after a degree-level qualification.
Route 06
Partner of a worker or resident
For: Spouses and partners of AEWV holders and residents
Open work rights for partners of skilled workers above the pay threshold.
Stop 03 · Visa & immigration
Visa & immigration details.
Immigration New Zealand is strict on employer accreditation and honest about timelines. Because the employer is vetted first, your application is mostly about proving you are who you say you are and that you can do the job.
What you'll need to show
- Job offer from an employer on the accredited list, with a Job Check completed
- Qualification assessed by NZQA, or an occupational registration (Nursing Council, Engineering NZ)
- English test — IELTS 6.5 overall for residence routes
- Two-plus years of relevant experience evidenced with references
- Chest X-ray and full medical from a panel physician
- Police certificate from India and any other country of 12+ months' residence
- Immigration levy and visa fee paid at lodgement
Stop 04 · Study & education
Study & education.
All eight New Zealand universities rank in the global top 500, and the polytechnic network (Te Pūkenga) offers applied diplomas that employers hire from directly. Post-study work rights are tied to the level of your qualification, so a master's is the sweet spot.
- Post Study Work Visa of up to 3 years for bachelor's and higher
- Students may work 20 hours a week during term, full-time in holidays
- Master's and PhD students can bring partners with open work rights
- PhD fees for international students are charged at the domestic rate
- February and July intakes at most institutions
Stop 05 · Job market
Job market & opportunities.
New Zealand's Green List is the shortest way to read its job market: nurses, midwives, GPs, civil and electrical engineers, software developers, surveyors and construction managers go straight to residence. Trades and teaching follow two years later. Salaries sit below Australia but so do the pressures.
Stop 06 · Can I afford it?
Can I afford it?.
Auckland is the expensive one — rents and house prices there rival Sydney. Wellington and Christchurch are more balanced, and regional cities offer good salaries with genuinely low rents. Groceries and cars are dearer than India expects; healthcare is largely free once you're resident.
Expensive
Auckland · Queenstown
Highest rents and most of the ICT and finance jobs.
Balanced
Wellington · Christchurch · Tauranga
Government, engineering and construction hubs with manageable rent.
Easier
Hamilton · Dunedin · Palmerston North · Nelson
Hospitals, universities and dairy industry hiring with the lowest rents.
Budget for these before you fly
- Four weeks' bond plus rent in advance
- A car — public transport is limited outside Auckland and Wellington
- NZQA assessment or professional registration fees before the visa
- Imported goods and electronics cost more than in India or the US
- Winter heating in older, poorly insulated houses
Stop 07 · Why go
Why New Zealand?.
Green List goes straight to residence
Shortage occupations skip the temporary phase entirely.
Employers are pre-vetted
Accreditation happens before you apply, so approvals are faster and cleaner.
Work-life balance is real
Consistently ranked among the best countries for quality of life and safety.
Less competition
Far fewer applicants than Australia or Canada for the same occupations.
Free public healthcare and schooling
Residents and most work-visa holders on 2+ year visas are covered.
Australia next door
NZ citizens can live and work in Australia freely.
Stop 08 · Life there
What's it like to live there?.
New Zealand is green, quiet and outdoorsy — mountains, beaches and vineyards within an hour of any city. People are informal and fair-minded, Indian communities in Auckland and Hamilton are large and long-established, and the pace of life is the slowest of any destination we file. Some clients find it too slow; most never leave.
Stop 09 · Long-term
Long-term: residence & citizenship.
Residence in New Zealand comes with a travel condition for the first two years; after that you can apply for permanent residence, which never expires. Citizenship follows five years of residence, and New Zealand permits dual nationality — India's OCI card is the usual answer.
- Stage 1
Work visa
AEWV for up to 5 years, or straight to residence on the Green List
- Stage 2
Resident → permanent resident
Residence granted; permanent residence after 2 years of meeting the travel condition
- Stage 3
Citizenship
5 years as a resident with sufficient presence each year, plus basic English

- 06

- 07

- 08

IRD number, bank account, KiwiSaver, GP enrolment and a place to live.
Stop 11 · Taxes
Taxes in New Zealand.
New Zealand keeps tax simple. Employers deduct income tax through PAYE, there is no general capital-gains tax, and most employees never file a return. KiwiSaver is a voluntary but near-universal retirement scheme with employer and government contributions.
- Apply for an IRD number as soon as you have an address and bank account
- Tax year runs 1 April to 31 March
- Progressive rates with no tax-free threshold — tax starts from the first dollar
- KiwiSaver: you contribute 3% or more, your employer matches at least 3%
- ACC levy funds no-fault accident cover for everyone in the country
- New residents get a temporary exemption on most foreign income for 4 years
